Shigefumi Kumachi, Ph.D.

My goal is to raise the success rate of
screening close to 100%.
- Why did you apply for the job?
I have been working as a founding member of EME. From my undergraduate and graduate programs in Dr. Nemoto lab, I have been working at the team of developing cDNA display method. My future goal is improving the cDNA display method for screening various types of candidate substances then making significant social contributions through my research at EME.
- What is rewarding about the job?
The work atmosphere is rewarding. It allows us to create our own plan to achieve the vision of the company rather than only focusing on assigned tasks. We also have relative freedom over our research.
- What is the work atmosphere like?
It doesn’t feel like work, in a good way [laughs].
We are strict about certain things, but we mostly have fun working.
- What are your future goals?
My goal is to raise the success rate of screening close to 100%.
I also do my best to train my juniors.

Kanako Nakao, Ph.D.
Chief Scientist
I think everyone here is understanding of assisting childcare, including the president.
- Why did you apply for the job?
Evolutionary molecular engineering was a new field of research for me, so I thought I want to challenge in this new field with the best of my ability. Also, this company is close to my house, so my commuting time got a little shorter.
- What is rewarding about the job?
I am able to comfortably work at my own pace, and easily share my ideas and reflections on the progression and growth of my project.
- What is the work atmosphere like?
I am able to offer up my opinions freely within my workplace. The work experience allows me the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with many individuals throughout the company, regardless of the differing department to which we belong.
Also, everyone here works hard and focus on their researches. This work environment makes me stay focused at my work.
- What are your future goals?
I want to succeed in the project which I have been working on as a leader. Also, I want to keep a balance between work and family because I’m busy with child-rearing too.

When I succeed, the sense of achievement is exhilarating.
- Why did you apply for the job?
I was interested in and looking for biotech startups I could join. When I visited EME’s website, I took interest in their technology, thought I could make use of the researches I did in university, and joined the company.
- What is rewarding about the job?
That I can take on new challenges.
I sometimes fail, but when I succeed, the sense of achievement is exhilarating.
- What is the work atmosphere like?
I can seek advice whenever I need it. The company has a very good environment which allows us to learn and absorb various things.
- What are your future goals?
My future goal is to be a researcher who achives worldwide success. I am a current Ph.D student in Saitama University. EME has been supporting me to purse Ph.D degree, so I’ve been working my best for researches at both EME and the graduate school.
